Sir,
Referring to my letter of the 19th of January last and
your reply of the 23rd of May, No. 13299, I am directed by
the Postmaster General to acquaint you, for the information
of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that, as
requested, he represented to the Peninsular and Oriental
Steam Navigation Company the wishes of the Hong Kong Govem-
ment with regard to the employment of additional officers
for the purpose of sorting correspondence on board the
Company's outward bound Packets between Singapore and Hong
Kong.
In their reply the Directors point out that in a
letter dated the 7th of July 1896 they had announced that
if the number of sorters on board their Mail Packets were
increased they would require to be paid for the additional
officers half the usual passage rates, but they are in this
instance willing to waive the question of payment and to
The Under Secretary of State,
